United Way Reaches Goal Of $54 Million United Way Reaches Goal Of $54 Million

United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania proudly announced it had reached its goal of $54 million dollars for the 2007 campaign during the annual United Way Champions for Impact Awards ceremony held at the Hyatt Regency Philadelphia at Penn’s Landing on May 2nd. The final total of $54 million is an increase of $2 million dollars over last year.

United Way’s Champions for Impact Awards was held on Friday May 2, during National Volunteer Week, and honored many local companies, agencies and volunteers for their exceptional work, dedication and support in advancing the common good in our region. The highlight of the event was the presentation of the Citizen Volunteer of the Year Award, United Way’s highest honor, to Sharmain Matlock-Turner, President and Executive Director of the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition.

Alba Martinez on Her Last Day

Alba E. Martinez, outgoing President and CEO of United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania was presented with special citations for her work at United Way and her 25 years of service to the community from both Governor Ed Rendell and Mayor Michael Nutter during United Way’s Champions for Impact Awards on Friday, May 2. The awards ceremony coincided with Ms. Martinez’ final day as President & CEO of United Way. Alba is leaving to pursue a new career in the business sector, directing Vanguard’s Education Markets Group.

United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania’s Women’s Initiative hosted their fifth annual Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow fund raising gala on Wednesday, April 9th at the Wanamaker Building Crystal Tea Room. This exciting event played host to over 600 of the Philadelphia area’s most successful and philanthropic women who are taking an active role in the community by giving their time and resources to support United Way’s Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow, a program that benefit young girls.

Grantmakers Call for Social Service Agencies
to Join Regional Registry

Some of the region’s leading private funders today launched a campaign to gather information for the first comprehensive regional database of health and social service providers across Southeastern Pennsylvania. The Regional Registry of Social Services (R2S2) will serve as a new tool for foundations, government and other funders to identify strong candidates for philanthropy in a variety of service areas. R2S2 is sponsored by several of the region’s leading private funders of human services: the William Penn Foundation, The Philadelphia Foundation, the Nonprofit Finance Fund and United Way. Other foundations are expected to join the project in the coming months.

Public Service Announcement

Comcast Corporation has generously produced a new public service announcement (PSA) for the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. The PSA, running on the Comcast cable system, features employees from Comcast, Vanguard and Tastykake. With the funding of this thirty second spot and the donated airtime, Comcast joins the growing family of United Way Partners in Caring, companies that donate media to United Way to help increase the visibility of United Way and its mission in the community on a year-round basis.
